In 2001 Jo worked with filmmaker
Anton Califano and composer Graham Jeffery to create
Dancing Houses for East London Dance.
The team worked with forty performers aged 14 –
80 to create a site-specific piece at Stratford Circus.
The piece explored the history of the soil on which
the building is built and was inspired by their interviews
with the man who was responsible for decontaminating
the land when the arts centre was built.
The land had been a market, a sweet factory, a car factory
and a theatre among other things. The team worked with
reminiscences of the cast (some of whom remembered the
market) and archive footage to create a performed history
of the site.
